Country Manager and IAPO Representative, Community Health And Information Network, Uganda

Regina is the Country Manager and IAPO representative for Community Health And Information Network (CHAIN) in Uganda; an organization founded in 1998 by a group of African professionals resident in the United Kingdom in the wake of the 1998 Geneva World AIDS Conference. The theme of the conference was, "Bridging the Gap between the North and South" to highlight how Africa continues to bear the brunt of the epidemic, and the burden borne by communities as a result of HIV/AIDS morbidity and mortality. It raised awareness of the need for those with a foothold in both worlds to form bridges of understanding and advocacy focal points to act as vehicles for resource mobilization in the effort to reverse the effects of the epidemic.

CHAIN's work is mostly undertaken in Africa, particularly in the Great Lakes Region (Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and DRC Congo), and promotes the empowerment of people living with HIV/AIDS.

Since the setting up of CHAIN Uganda office, Regina has been actively involved in activities addressing the plight of patients and particularly HIV/AIDS.  She has worked on capacity building for NGOs and CBOs in governance and policy issues, treatment literacy and access and building and strengthening networks in collaboration with other Patients Organizations in Uganda to address issues of patient health centered care.

She is also vice chairperson of Uganda Indigenous Knowledge Society (UGKIS), an association that promotes the use of Indigenous knowledge and documents and validates indigenous knowledge practices that can be integrated into the development process. She is a part-time lecturer at Makerere University, Faculty of Forestry and Nature Conservation.

Regina holds M.A Public Administration & Management, Bachelor of Education and Postgraduate Diploma in Project Planning & Mgt, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.

US-Uganda Orphans Scholarship Programme (US-UOSP)

The idea of this fund originated from a discussion Regina Kamoga (Uganda) had with Virginia Ladd (USA) during an International Alliance of Patients Organizations (IAPO) meeting in London in the fall of 2005. Virginia was aware of the problem of Uganda orphans not being able to attend school due, to lack of funds for school fees and requirements.  Because of her and her husbands primary school scholarship program in Indonesia, she understood that it did not take much in US$ to support a child’s education in a developing country. She approached Regina with a proposal asking whether Regina would ascertain the cost of providing both primary and boarding school scholarships to needy orphans. She asked Regina whether she would be willing to identify the orphans and be responsible for managing the funds to support the education and educational needs of these orphans. Regina agreed to do so on a voluntary basis, and Virginia and her husband agreed to sponsor six primary/universal students and one secondary/high school boarding student. She decided to mention the project to Myrl Weinberg, another IAPO board member, and found that she was also interested in sponsoring scholarships. This inspired her to talk with some of her friends and relatives. She found that many wanted to become involved. Word spread through e-mail; Virginia began to receive e-mails from others who wanted to sponsor a child or children. This led us to think about developing a broader initiative to address the overwhelming needs and numbers of orphaned children in Uganda.  Hence the US-Uganda Orphans Scholarship Project was born to collect the funds.
